Export / Import

At the end of 2007 the commercial relationship between Peru and the UK had a value of US$360 million, making the UK Peru’s 24th most important commercial partner.

Imports from the UK to Peru have been increasing consistently year on year, predominantly due to machinery and equipment imports. Peru is also a net importer from the UK in terms of human medicine and spirits, such as whisky. Other products imported to Peru from the UK include photography consumables, pistons, gas turbines spare parts and digital processing units.
Exports on the other hand from Peru to the UK have reduced overall in the last 2 years, primarily due to a reduction in traditional exports, specifically gold. However non traditional exports, particularly agricultural products, have been increasing consistently and are gaining a strong foothold in the British market. Significant Peruvian products in the British market include tangerines, mangos, grapes, asparagus, avocado, coffee, copper cathodes, crude tin, crude silver, zinc oxide, and textiles. It is important to mention that reaching the British market is extremely challenging due to strict requirements relating to product volumes, flavour, freshness, temperature, durability, nutritional value, delivery timings, packaging, labelling and size uniformity and most importantly in terms of price.

Investments

According to Promperu Britain is currently the third largest foreign investor in Peru, mainly due to significant investments in the mining, communication, finance and energy sectors.
There are significant investments in the mining sector from Rio Tinto, Anglo-American and BHP Billiton. Peru, along with other South American countries is also currently a very appealing market for investments in environmental projects, such as those covered by Clean Development Mechanism standards. Current British investments include investments in landfill projects from ICECAP and hydroelectric power from Trading Emissions plc.

Investments in the tourism sector include significant investments from Orient Express Hotels Trains and Cruises; in finance from HSBC; in Communications from British Telecom.
